Has it really been ten years already since Matt Brand originally founded Pÿlon?
Time flies … but slowly so for this troupe of doom aficionados. Rather than acting if there was any past to celebrate, Pÿlon are taking it expressly easy with their first vinyl-only release: after all, there is only so much ? or, more specifically, so little ? music which will fit on the big petrol disc, thus, for the first time, two consecutive years yield a respective new record by the band.
Nonetheless, the selection profits from the additional care put into the compositions and arrangements, aided by the fact that Andy La Morte?s delicate guitar-playing freed Matt Brand to concentrate on his noticeably honed vocal delivery and even keyboard melodies occasionally have come to the fore.
An idiosyncratic reworking of Black Sabbath?s signature tune Paranoid with a flute solo substituting for the expected guitar leads rounds the album off … and invites to wonder where Pÿlon?s path will take the band next.
Recommended listening: Returnal Etern ? Psalm 139 (pts I & II)
