I was looking forward to hearing this classic album in a new light, but having given both cd and dvd a spin, I’m left feeling somewhat underwhelmed.
Comparing the 2011 cd to the previous version issued in 1997, there’s very little discernible difference in the sound. Those of you looking for a louder ballsier mix will be disappointed. Having said that, I’m glad they didn’t mess about with it, but honestly, it’s no different to the previous version.
The dvd offers the album in stereo and 5.1 surround mixes, but not DTS! Once again, Universal’s packaging is misleading, as the cd case clearly shows the DTS logo (the same thing happened with Universal’s reissue of Thin Lizzy’s Live and Dangerous, misleadingly stating that the bonus dvd was in DTS, when in fact it was only mono.)
The 5.1 mix on the Rush dvd is fine, but again, it didn’t really grab me. It just sounded like an expanded version of the stereo mix, but without the added clarity that a DTS mix would have provided. And the stereo mix is just that - no high resolution. If you want the high quality audio versions then you should go for the blu-ray version instead.
If you haven’t already got this album, then this is worth buying, as the music itself is excellent and stands the test of time. Arguably the band were at their creative peak on this album, pushing the boundaries of music that could be made by a trio without the over-reliance of synths that came with later albums.
But if you already have the 1997 cd, this new release probably isn’t worth the money.

UPDATE[/B][/U]I’ve since gone out and bought the blu-ray edition, and am much more impressed with the mixes on this edition. The DTS 5.1 mix is a knockout, and the options for lyrics, liner notes etc are so much more extensive than the dvd version.
Not sure why the dvd version is such a shoddy release by comparison, but whole-heartedly endorse all the favourable comments on the blu-ray edition posted by other customers!
