Three founders of file-sharing website The Pirate Bay have lost their appeal against their jail sentences and fines for copyright crimes.
Fredrik Neij, Peter Sunde and Carl Lundstrom were found guilty of copyright crimes lat year. They were handed one-year jail sentences in Stockholm and ordered to pay £2.4million in damages to various record labels. They appealed, but now a Swedish appeals court has upheld the decision.
They had their sentences reduced to ten, eight and four months respectively but their fine has increased to £4.1million, reports Techwatch.co.uk. A fourth founder of the site, Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, was unable to attend the hearing yesterday (November 26) due to ill health.
The decision was welcomed by Frances Moore, CEO of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, representing the music industry. ?Today?s judgement confirms the illegality of The Pirate Bay and the seriousness of the crimes of those involved,? she said.
She added: “We now look to governments and ISPs to take note of this judgement, do the responsible thing and take the necessary steps to get The Pirate Bay shut down.”
As of today (27) The Pirate Bay is still running at Thepiratebay.org.
