Στις πρώτες ακροάσεις μου φάνηκε σαν ένας Καίσαρας 2 και δεν ενθουσιάστηκα (μόνο το “Hour of the wolf” και το “Apocalypse 1993” μου είχαν κάνει εντύπωση). Τελικά ακρόαση στην ακρόαση σου ξεδιπλώνονται πράγματα που δεν τα πιάνεις με την πρώτη (τουλάχιστον εγώ) και σ’ εντυπωσιάζουν: το μεσαίο μέρος με το πιάνο στο “Russian doll” που είναι σαν ξαφνικά να μπαίνει εμβόλιμο άλλο κομμάτι. Η (τόσο ξεδιάντροπη, μα εθιστική) pop αύρα του “Machine guns and peacock feathers”. Τα κιθαριστικά (; ) bends που απογειώνουν το “Little boy”. Το “Shadows of the sun”-ικό (ΟΚ, αν είχε άλλη ενορχήστρωση) κλείσιμο του “A thousand cuts”.
Ο Καίσαρας με είχε αφήσει με άριστες εντυπώσεις, και νομίζω ακόμα το προτιμώ από τα Άνθη. Ίσως παίζει ρόλο και το στοιχείο της έκπληξης. Ωστόσο θεωρώ κι αυτό ένα πολύ καλό album που μάλλον με τον καιρό “μεγαλώνει” μέσα σου -σε 'μένα, τουλάχιστον, ακόμα λειτουργεί έτσι, δηλαδή είμαι σε φάση “wow, τα έγχορδα από που ξεφύτρωσαν τώρα;”, ενώ έχω ακούσει το κομμάτι ήδη 4-5 φορές κλπ.
Επίσης θα σκάσω, αλλά η βασική μελωδία του “Apocalypse 1993” παίχτηκε από τους Τεράστιους όταν πειραματίζονταν με synthesizers εκεί στα 70’s.
Double-post, αλλά η κωλοτούμπα νομίζω έρχεται. Σήμερα κατέληξα ότι το προτιμώ από το προηγούμενο και σίγουρα μιλάμε για έναν από τους top δίσκους της χρονιάς.
Originally did this Lee Hazlewood song for a Jester Records compilation (Trick 020) which was never brought to fruition – way earlier than 2012 (but can no longer remember exactly when…). The song was never properly mixed. What you hear here is probably just a rough listen-at-home bounce we did before we forgot all about it… Found it years later on an old CD-R (remember those?)

Summary
Hexahedron documents the second of the two dazzling, sold-out Ulver shows in the legendary Studio at Henie Onstad Kunstsenter at Høvikodden back in April 2018. A special commission and “an honourable undertaking”, as Tore Ylwizaker put it in their career-spanning book Wolves Evolve – The Ulver Story , published last year. “To orientate our music into an art setting is appealing to me”, he said. “Doing whatever we want, not knowing what it’s supposed to become or where it will end up.”
During the shows at Henie Onstad the band found themselves trapped in a multidimensional “hypercube” in the middle of the asymmetric space. Inside it they experimented with all-new ideas in an installation as galactic as the music presented was unmistakably ulverish. Around them, the audience moved unhindered among hallucinatory lights and laser-guided melodies, losing themselves in interstellar clouds of gas, dust and broken junk of exploded stars. I suppose we were all sidereal messengers, cruising through the groovy galaxies.
Three years have passed, and finally it’s here. One continuous session of sixty minutes broken into five parts. Professionally multi-tracked in the gallery, a first go at the mix was done simultaneously with Drone Activity , early 2019. They left it for Flowers of Evil , for which the seeds had already been sown. You’ll notice. Then The Ulver Story was brought to a conclusion, with huge plans for their final dance. But as we all know, the pandemic put a spanner in the works.
Come 2021, and Anders Møller and Kristoffer Rygg decided to restart the Solid State Logic console in Subsonic Society. A total recall made the job less gruelling than expected, they report, and in a fortnight the mixes were in stellar shape, ready to be mastered by Vegard Sleipnes via the same society’s good old Studer tape machine and collection of high-end outboard gear.
The result is spectacular, spaced out, and “astral black… with hints of Supertramp and Sun Ra”, as the band jestingly told someone on a social medium. But most of all Hexahedron is expansive, transportive and luminous. A moment of flight captured for posterity. A dancing star.
Or as curator Lars Mørch Finborud states in the album’s liner notes: “a definite highlight in Henie Onstad Kunstsenter’s music and performance history.”

As you will hear and see, we’re toying around with an idea which not so long after became “Little Boy” on Flowers of Evil. There’s one other such (small) section from this gig, which might be recognisable from that album – otherwise it’s unheard/unpublished music. An hour, all in all. And quite the trip!

Όχι εντάξει, γενικά τάσσομαι αναφανδόν υπέρ των προκλητικών δηλώσεων και εννοείται ότι το Νάτενς είναι κορυφαίο δείγμα του νορβηγικού ήχου. Απλά πάντα είχα αυτή την εντύπωση ας πούμε ότι οι ULVER (ή ο Garm προσωπικά αν θες) παίξαν black metal επειδή έπεσαν στον συγκεκριμένο χωροχρόνο. Δεν αμφιβάλλω ότι το γούσταραν τότε αυτό που έκαναν, σε φάση εφηβικός έρωτας, αλλά φάνηκε ξεκάθαρα ότι το καλλιτεχνικό πεπρωμένο τους ήταν αλλού.
Δεν μπορώ να πω ότι κατανοώ ακριβώς τι θες να πεις, απλώς εξελίχθηκαν θεωρώ. Ή μάλλον ορθότερα, όπως είπες, προσωπικά ο Garm. Όσο και αν λατρεύω τα μετέπειτα δέρματα που φόρεσε στις επόμενες κυκλοφορίες του, για μένα και η τριλογία αποτελείται από ατόφια 10αρια.
