Over seven years ago, in the sweltering summer of 2015, British journalist Paul Mason found himself in a state of uncontrollable excitement. He was standing in the middle of Athens’s Syntagma square, surrounded by thousands of Greek protesters chanting songs and slogans from the country’s fight against the dictatorship in the 1970s. Up on the stage he could see the Syriza head and Greek president, Alexis Tsipras, leader of six-month-old government now mired in a protected battle with the European authorities. Tsipras had been campaigning for a “No” vote in the referendum scheduled for the next day, launched as the final move in his standoff with the Eurogroup and the IMF. Mason in turn had been chronicling Syriza’s travails for the British channel 4, informing followers on Twitter and Facebook and drafting rousing columns for the Guardian.
On the night of Syriza’s election victory on January 6, 2015 Mason inserted a short reply to a tweet by American adult actress Jessica Stoyadinovich (“Stoya”), who had briefly mentioned the Greek drama: “Stoya,” Mason exclaimed ecstatically, “come to Athens, the revolution is happening!”.
Seven years later, Mason was engaged in a different set of practices. In early 2022, he had begun emailing contacts in British secret services with info on members of the UK labour party who had left the party after Jeremy Corbyn’s successor, Keir Starmer, Mason worried that the remaining Corbynites in the party would push for a pro-Russian line following Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. Mason’s messages signaled the twilight of a new epoch: from populist enthusiast to aspiring counter intelligence informant, from Syntagma to whitewall.
Mason’s conversion also marks the close of an era: the period of “left populism,” when left-wing parties and movements across the West- some old, some new- initiated a populist turn.
Στην Ελλάδα ιδιαίτερα βρισκόμαστε με τα μπούνια στην μετά “Όχι” εποχή. Ταφόπλακα για την αριστερά. Ενώ υπάρχει και σε άλλες χώρες αγανάκτηση με το σύστημα δεν υπάρχει απογοήτευση και παραίτηση σε αυτό τον βαθμό.
Εδώ σκεφτόμαστε πλέον κυρίως επιλογές ανάμεσα στα λιγότερο χειρότερα. Φύγε εσύ έλα εσύ. Έξω ο Μητσοτάκης να έρθει ο Κασελακης. Γιατί; Γιατί ελπίζουμε να είναι λίγο, ελάχιστα καλύτερος. Δεν μπορεί να είναι τόσο κακός όσο ο Μητσοτάκης Ε; Ε;
Και οι ψηφοφόροι της Ν.Δ. συνήθως μέσες άκρες έτσι σκέφτονται. Δεν περιμένουν πολλά από Μητσοτάκη κλπ απλά πως δεν θα είναι σαν τους άλλους τους μπιπ που μας έβαλαν σε περιπέτειες κλπ. Κ
Κάπως έτσι έχουμε πλέον σε όλη τη Δύση την επικράτηση του Δεξιόστροφου λαϊκισμού. Και στην παραιτημενη Ελλάδα πέρα από το λιγότερο χειρότερο έχουμε Βελόπουλο, Νίκη κλπ …και λόγο απογοήτευσης και παραίτησης μεγάλη αποχή.
