And One is a German Synthpop and EBM band. Their members include Steve Naghavi, Chris Ruiz (1989 - 1991 and 2001 to present), Joke Jay (1992 - 2001), Rick Schah, Alex Two (1990 - 1993), Annelie Bertilsson (2000) and Gio van Oli (2001 to present). The band formed after Steve Naghavi and Chris Ruiz met in 1989 at a Berlin club. Being fans of early EBM music, Naghavi and Ruiz decided to follow in the footsteps of Synth-pop band Depeche Mode by using two keyboards and a beatbox. The duo became a trio with the addition of Alex Two, prior to the release of their debut album, Anguish. Going into the release of Anguish they had already garnered a decent following through touring and appearances at various parties. With their debut release they took home the “Best New Artist” award in Germany in 1991. While Naghavi is still with the band, Ruiz left in 1992. The band is now comprised of 4 members: Steve Naghavi, Joke Jay (replacing Ruiz), Rick Schah (replacing Two) and Annelie Bertilsson. And One has released on two different record labels, leaving Machinery Records for Virgin Records around 1996-97, while label/distributor Metropolis Records currently handling portions of their distribution.
On February 21, 2006, And One announced that their next album, Bodypop, was to be released on September 1, 2006 by Out of Line (Europe) and Metropolis Records (US) [2][3]. The single Military Fashion Show preceded the album.
The band pulled out of their 2007 US tour with VNV Nation for unknown reasons…

Covenant is a band from Sweden that has created electronic body music (EBM)[1][2] and futurepop[1][2] since 1986. They have been releasing their music since the early 1990s. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, electronic music and several of its subgenres became a preferred musical style among European underground culture. It gained favor initially within major cities and eventually trickled into the continent’s more socially secluded regions. This new wave of music was discovered at different instances by a group of young friends living among the shadows of Helsingborg, a scenic municipality in southern Sweden. Eskil Simonsson, Joakim Montelius, and Clas Nachmanson, three teenagers with mutual, youthful curiosities for science, philosophy, and matters of existence, were enthralled by the unique presentation and the emotional content offered through the music, specifically by that of bands such as Kraftwerk, The Human League, and by EBM pioneers Front 242 and Nitzer Ebb…

Beborn Beton is a German synth pop band founded in 1989, with their first album release in 1993. The debut named “Tybalt” is a compilation of the best tracks written in the first three years of their band history and was very well received in the electronic music scene. 1995 the follow-up album “Concrete Ground” saw the light of day contributing to their reputation of fine synth-pop craftsmen and witty songwriters. After a change of record label in 1996 their break-through album “Nightfall” was released featuring the club-filler “Im Innern Einer Frau”. Produced by José Alvarez (“Wolfsheim”, “De/Vision”) this collection of electro-pop gems is still one of their best-known and most popular albums in Europe as well as the Americas, only to be topped by their album “Truth” in 1997. This release is best known for the single “Another World”, which received airplay in Europe and was popular in many synth pop and industrial music nightclubs in Europe and the United States…

Wolfsheim is a synthpop band from Hamburg, Germany. The band was founded in 1987 by Markus Reinhardt and Pompejo Ricciardi. They were inspired by the name of a fictional character from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby…In 2001, Heppner recorded more songs as a guest artist. His collaboration with Schiller, “Dream of You” got heavy rotation on Germany’s MTV station. He also collaborated on “Glasgarten” with Goethes Erben. These collaborations brought Wolfsheim still more attention. Also in 2001, Metropolis Records brought Wolfsheim to American audiences, releasing “Spectators” domestically.

On April 16th, 2002, Wolfsheim released their first (and only to date) DVD, Kompendium. It featured a recording from the Spectators tour, an interview, and various music videos.

“Casting Shadows”, their sixth and latest album, was released in March of 2003. The single “Kein Zurück” was released on February 2, and debuted at number 5 on the Media Control Charts and went to number 4. It stayed in the top ten for 10 weeks. “Casting Shadows” itself reached the top position on the charts.

In March and April of 2004, Wolfsheim went on their first (and to date only) tour in the USA.

Wolfsheim’s style takes cues from the 1980s New Romantics and New Wave; their lyrics tend to be melancholic, but at the same time modernist.

Icon of Coil is a Norwegian futurepop group. The band was established as a solo project in 1997 by Andy LaPlegua who was joined by former Sector 9 (now Moonitor and Zombie Girl) bandmate Sebastian Komor to perform live. With the release of Shallow Nation, the band’s first single, Komor joined full-time. In 2000, Christian Lund joined the live lineup. Later that year the band’s first full-length album, Serenity is the Devil, was released, which climbed to number one on the Deutsche Alternative Charts. Shortly thereafter, Lund became a full-time band member.

Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek cut his teeth emulating John Coltrane and blowing gales through the muscular compositions of George Russell and open improvisations of Keith Jarrett. But since the mid 1980s, the saxophonist has been making an increasingly rarefied and composed music full of chords suspended in space, harmonies echoing in gothic recesses, and always, wrenching saxophone melodies. In Praise of Dreams is his latest foray into a music that reaches for the mystical. With just Garbarek, some keyboard pads, light percussion from Manu Katché and haunting viola by Kim Kashkashian, In Praise of Dreams is instrumentally sparse, yet deep in emotion and atmosphere. Based mostly on rhythm loops, there’s a hypnotic trance quality to Garbarek’s compositions, but also a tinge of nostalgia with Kashkashian’s wistful violin. You could be in a mediaeval stave church in Norway or a Parisian café circa 1890. Atop it all are Garbarek’s saxophones. He builds many of his improvisations off Kashkashian’s viola, echoing her melody lines, then spiraling off with his keening soprano saxophone hailing lamentations like a rainstorm and his tenor calling out in a torrent of emotion barely leashed. This isn’t a jazz album in the traditional sense, but a tone poem of memory and dreams. --John Diliberto
